From The Shelf - Saul Leiter - Early Color.
Although Leiter was an established fashion photographer in New York in the 40s, 50s and 60s, working for magazines such as Esquire and Harpers Bazaar and had been included in exhibitions at MOMA, it wasn’t till this book came out in 2005 that his career got the respect it was due.
Well known book editor Martin Harrison put together this cracking collection of his work through publisher Steidl. It sold out within months and 83 year old Leiter was an overnight sensation.
The pictures shot mostly in New York in the 1950s and 60s show Leiter’s subtle ability to use colour and detail to capture street life in all weathers. Steamy windows, Trilby hats, dripping brollies and snowy postmen all tinged with Kodachrome’s vintage tones. The small size of the book, 8” square, only adds to it’s appeal. A bundle of joy in book form!
